The tropical forest is home to many native species, while the extensive mangroves and mudflats attrack an immense traffic of migratory birds.
Every year the port of San Blas, located less than an hour's drive north of Playa Las Tortugas, hosts the prestigious International Migratory Bird Festival, which draws crowds of avid birdwatchers from all around the globe.
